SCHOOL SPORT

Hunter Ice Skating Stadium offers skating and sponge hockey as school sports to all high schools in the Newcastle and Hunter Region. Currently, 20 schools come at various times throughout the week between 9:30 and 2:30 Monday to Friday. During the sessions, the ice is divided into two sections – one for general skating and one for sponge hockey.

In the skating section, the lights are dimmed and a big screen plays the hottest Top 40 music videos. In the sponge hockey section we have a supervised game of hockey that each school takes turns at playing. If the students need a break from either activities, the canteen is open during the sessions and they can buy hot food and drinks.

The cost per student is $5.50 including helmets and sticks for all children participating in sponge hockey. Traditionally, no safety equipment is required for general skating, however helmets will be provided for those students who wish to wear them.
